The System Knows Best
Immersive Theatre Experience
Exploring the relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence through immersive storytelling, spatial sound and interactive design.
The System Knows Best is an immersive theatre experience designed to challenge audiences’ perceptions of artificial intelligence, control and human decision making.
Unlike traditional theatre, audiences became active participants, progressing through a series of carefully designed environments where every interaction encouraged reflection on our growing dependence on technology.
The production combined immersive storytelling with lighting, spatial audio and environmental design to create a journey that evolved throughout the experience.
The Project
-
One of the biggest design priorities was ensuring every space felt completely different.
Each room represented a stage in humanity’s relationship with AI, with technical design reinforcing the emotional journey.
The lighting became progressively more controlled and artificial, while the soundscape shifted from natural environments to highly processes electronic textures before eventually combining both worlds in the final space.
Rather than relying on dialogue alone, the environment itself became part of the storytelling.
-
Sound formed the emotional backbone of the experience.
The design incorporated:
Layered environmental recordings
Spatial audio
Voice over guidance
AI recored announcements
Reactive Sound Effects
Carefully designed moments of silence
Each element was positioned to encourage visitors to explore the space and remain immersed within the narrative.
-
Lighting was designed to subtly influence audience emotion throughout the experience.
Warm, natural tones created feeling of comfort during the opening stages before gradually transitioning into cooler, highly controlled environments as artificial intelligence assumed greater influence over the audience’s decisions.
The final scene combined both visual styles to reinforce the production’s central theme of coexistence rather than conflict.

The project required balancing technical complexity with accessibility.
Without relying on actors, every cue had to communicate narrative through the environment itself.
The required careful coordination between sound, lighting and video to ensure each transition remained intuitive for participants.
-
The experience demonstrated how technical design can become an active storytelling tool rather than simply supporting a production.
Visitors described the installation as thought provoking, immersive and emotionally engaging.
-
This project strengthened my understanding of environmental storytelling and reinforced the importance of integrating technical disciplines for the earliest stages of concept development.
